Several triggers for recent market turbulence At the end of last week and the beginning of this week, there were sharp fluctuations on the global financial markets. The immediate trigger was figures from the US labor market, which were published last Friday and came in weaker than expected. This fueled fears of a significant economic slowdown in the US. The aforementioned movements accelerated after the weekend, as the Asian stock exchanges, and the Japanese stock market in particular, opened with massive price losses. The main reason for this is likely to have been the unwinding of carry trades in Japan. Over the course of this week, the situation on the markets calmed down and there were counter-movements on both the equity and bond markets. We expect this normalization to continue. |
