In the 1Q of 2023, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 0.1% in the EU, compared with the previous quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2022, GDP had decreased by 0.2% in the EU. Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 1.0% in the EU in the first quarter of 2023.

Spain has taken over the Presidency of the Council of the EU for the next six months as of 1 July 2023. Spain holds the presidency of the Council of the EU for the fifth time. The motto: 'Europe, closer' highlights Spain's commitment to advancing in European unity, bringing citizens closer to the decisions present in our day-to-day lives.

EU annual inflation was 7.1% in May 2023, down from 8.1% in April. A year earlier, the rate was 8.8%.

In 2022, the EU exported €158 billion worth of cars, which was €8 billion more than the previous peak of €150 billion in 2015. Imports in 2022 amounted to €62 billion, giving the EU a trade surplus of €96 billion.
