ECB eases capital requirements

To mitigate the consequences of the spread of the Corona Virus, the ECB has announced the temporary easing of capital requirements.

The ECB hopes that the equity relief resulting from the announced measures will help banks to further support the economy by providing credit.

In our view, however, it is more important that the relief will help cushion an increase in non-performing loans as a result of the emerging economic downturn.

In addition to the easing of the capital requirements, the ECB has also announced that it will apply more generous deadlines for the implementation of measures in the course of individual bank reviews. In this context, the ECB supports the EBA's decision to postpone the bank stress test due this year.
